The Right Question Institute (RQI), located in Cambridge, MA, develops and disseminates innovative methods that allow anyone – no matter educational, income or literacy level -- to advocate for themselves and to participate more effectively in decisions that affect them. In the last few years, the Right Question Institute (RQI) has catalyzed an international movement to teach students to ask their own questions. This has been a relatively quiet phenomenon now gaining considerable attention as it has spread to more than a million classrooms around the world, transforming pedagogy and learning for teachers and students.
The plan now is for the organization to expand its reach to have a similarly profound impact on how social services and other direct service agencies can build the capacity of people in low-income communities to advocate for themselves and their families. RQI will also be introducing an innovative concept, Microdemocracy, to draw attention to how more people can begin to participate in democracy.
For this strategic business growth we are seeking a strong person at the senior management level who can drive and manage the process, joining the team as the Director of Organizational Growth and Operations. We are relying on this new position, under the direction of the Co-Executive Directors, to lead the planning process for RQI’s next chapter, refine the business strategy to support that growth, and ultimately develop and manage the internal operations needed to support our work on a much larger scale.
PROJECTED RESPONSIBILITIES AND PRIORITIES
While the Director of Organizational Growth and Operations must understand and be fully invested in RQI’s mission and programmatic work, s/he will be a complement to the Co-Directors’ programmatic leadership and responsible for planning, putting management systems in place, and ultimately assuring that those systems work for the benefit of RQI’s mission and expanded impact. This new position is analogous to the “managing director” position in a growing arts organization whose program is led by an “artistic director.”
Specific responsibilities include:
- Organizing and managing a strategic and business planning process that yields priorities and action plans for marketing, resource and capacity development;
- Managing the search, hiring and development of talent required to pursue expanded program, communications, promotion, and fund development with public and private sources;
- Designing and implementing staffing structure and management systems that support all areas of operations: human resources management, office and administrative functions, integration of financial data for budgeting and financial planning, information and data management;
- Supporting and building Board engagement by generating meaningful data and reports to keep the Board apprised of program, operations and financial developments;
- Introducing and building staff’s adoption of systems for accountability and project management, monthly planning, documentation of progress and outcomes, and ultimately ongoing planning and evaluation.

- Bachelor or graduate degree required
- Five plus years of experience working in a collaborative environment with demonstrated responsibility for managing growth initiatives and operational areas in support of program such as business management functions, staff management, marketing, and internal operations..
- Creative and strategic thinker who can support the ideal of open source dissemination, while bringing a business planning orientation and experience with earned income models for nonprofits
- Experience managing program and organizational expansion and change
- Project management skills and mindset; highly organized and able to organize others
- Strong people skills; comfortable in collaborative workplace with traditionally flat hierarchy
- Experience with people management and human resource functions: search; hiring; performance management
- Experience with financial planning and budgeting, contract management, funder relations
- Commitment to and understanding of the integration of program, fundraising, and financial management priorities and functions
- Appreciation for the importance of stakeholder engagement
- Versed in all Microsoft office suite of technology including, Word, Excel, Powerpoint
- Excellent communication skills – both written and oral
- Salary commensurate with experience, and in line with the finances of a small non-profit, ranging from $70K – $95K
