The Assistant Director of Planned Giving is responsible for managing a diverse portfolio of planned giving donors and prospects and will be a key player in building Mass General Hospital’s comprehensive Planned Giving program at an exciting time of growth. The Assistant Director will provide technical and fundraising expertise in cultivating, soliciting and closing outright gifts, bequests, charitable remainder trusts, charitable gift annuities, pooled income funds, charitable lead trusts, gifts of real estate and gifts of other complex assets. S/he will serve as a primary resource to other frontline staff in advancing planned gifts and serve as a primary contact to advisors and family members. S/he will also take the lead in building upon existing stand-alone stewardship activities, including the Phillips Society Luncheon, an annual signature stewardship event. S/he will oversee the creation and management of a structured short-term and long-term stewardship plan for the Planned Giving program.

- Proactively manage a portfolio of 150+ prospects capable of making deferred and outright gifts.
- Effectively develop and execute strategies, goals and objectives for the identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of planned giving donors and prospects in collaboration with annual giving, major and principal gifts teams consistent with moves management principles.
- Set and meet individual performance targets for donor meetings, proposals solicited and closed, and cross-departmental collaborations.
- Independently prepare gift proposals in response to donor inquiries by phone, email and meetings.
- Act as a resource to frontline staff for questions regarding planned gifts, including providing technical, financial, estate and tax information.
- Proactively collaborate with the Office of General Counsel, the Partner’s Real Estate Office and outside legal counsel on complex gift situations.
- Build and nurture effective, positive working relationships with colleagues, senior management, physicians, researchers, and volunteer leadership when possible.
- Arrange meetings between donors, prospects and members of the MGH Board, President’s Council, administrative leaders and medical staff as appropriate.
- Participate in monthly Major Gifts meetings as scheduled.
- Serve as the Planned Giving liaison at major gift meetings and MGH Fund team meetings.
- Collaborate with the Prospect Research team on MGO/MGH Fund portfolio review meetings.
- Identify, recruit, and train volunteer leaders in the concepts of planned giving, when appropriate.
- Work closely with the Prospect Research team to advance work with donors.
- Work closely with Donor Relations team to identify and implement stewardship strategies.
- Work closely with the Special Events team to engage donors and prospects. Events may include hospital tours, small dinners and larger dinners or receptions, or larger events as warranted.
- Develop an understanding of the breadth of research, clinical, teaching and community service programs of the MGH and its departments.
- Build upon existing stewardship activities and create and manage an annual stewardship plan for the Planned Giving program.
- Oversee the planning and execution of the annual Phillips Society Luncheon in close collaboration with Major Gifts partners, the Planned Giving Coordinator, and the Special Events team.
- Offer input into Planned Giving marketing and Phillips Society initiatives.
- Assist in management of projects undertaken by the Planned Giving Coordinator relating to donor work, stewardship activities, scheduling, correspondence, mailing list requests, portfolio maintenance and Raiser’s Edge entry as related to individual donor activity.
- Participate in short-term and long-term planning to support growth of the program and department.
- Work periodically on special projects to benefit the department as requested.
- Collaborate with Senior Director on prospecting for the Division of Palliative Care and Geriatric Medicine when possible.
- Possess a commitment to professional development through attendance at seminars, PGGNE workshops, independent reading and professional affiliations and networking to stay current on financial, tax and estate matters that affect planned giving.
- Effectively apply working knowledge of planned giving in everyday interactions with donors and colleagues.
A Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 3-5 years in development and a proven record of identifying, cultivating, soliciting, closing and stewarding gifts. Experience in planned giving preferred. The ideal candidate will also possess the following skills, abilities and attributes:
- Working knowledge of tax laws and charitable estate planning.
- Ability to stay informed on best practices and emerging trends in planned giving.
- Ability to perform complex tasks and projects, establish priorities, resolve issues and function independently.
- Excellent writing, interpersonal and organization skills and superb attention to detail.
- Excellent computer skills (MS Office, PGCalc and other development databases a plus).
- Strong commitment to quality work and customer service.
- Ability to multi-task and work within a fast-paced environment.
- Strong analytical and project management skills.
- Strong proposal writing and presentation skills.
