The Development and Communications Manager will play a lead role in identifying, cultivating, and securing funding from individual and major donors, administering the database, be the lead coordinator for at least one large annual fundraiser and a number of smaller fund- and friend-raisers throughout the year, and manage LSA’s communications and marketing efforts (marketing materials, annual reports, social media, website, E-news, etc.). This position is ideal for someone who is ready to expand and deepen their fundraising and communication skills and provides an excellent opportunity to learn and grow with an innovative and impactful organization. Working closely with the Interim Director of Development and the Executive Director, this position will play a key role in the organization’s larger fundraising and communications efforts, both inward facing within the organization and outward facing with the larger community.

Principal Responsibilities:


  • Working closely with the Development Committee and Interim DoD, design, develop and manage at least one major fundraising event and a number of smaller events annually, including coffees, house parties, legislative breakfasts, and other opportunities to connect with and cultivate donations and gifts. Includes soliciting corporate and business sponsorships.

Individual and Major Donors

  • In partnership with the Interim DoD, ED, and Board of Directors, identify, cultivate, secure, and steward gifts from individual and major donors, sponsors, and businesses. Includes coordinating and scheduling donor meetings for the ED/Interim DoD as well as coordinating donor recognition activities and engagement. Work closely with the Board of Directors to develop new prospects in each category.
  • Monitor all donor information; provide and present statistical analysis to board and senior leaders and Board.
  • Gift Processing and Database Management: Fully manage the GiftWorks database, including creating accurate timelines, maintaining contact information, and documenting, recognizing, and processing all pledges and gifts (including grants and corporate donations).
  • Design and manage annual fund appeals (at least two /year).
  • Develop and implement a stewardship program aimed at cultivating deeper ties with donors.
  • Oversee volunteer initiatives to engage community and individual support, including in-kind donations.
  • Broaden LSA's fundraising by developing approaches such as planned giving, solicitation of bequests, a monthly sustainer/giving program, appeals to local business and corporations, and peer to peer fundraising.
  • Coordinate all Board fundraising activities.

Communications and Marketing

  • In partnership with the Interim DoD, create and distribute communications and marketing materials, including but not limited to the annual report, quarterly newsletters, collateral materials for funders and partners, social media, etc.
  • Manage production and distribution of all print and electronic collateral, including newsletters, e-newsletters, brochures, etc.
  • Manage all social media accounts and update regularly.
  • Create and curate content (written pieces, photography, video, etc.) for LSA’s social media outlets and website. Oversee the regular updating and maintenance of the website.
  • Represent the organization at local and state events/meetings, as needed.
  • Develop and maintain press contacts, helping LSA become a thought leader. Coordinate outreach to media through press releases, occasional stories, opinion pieces, and blog entries. 
  • Help ensure consistent articulation and projection of organizational brand throughout the organization and to external constituencies via disciplined communication in language and visual images.


  • Review and edit grant proposals as needed in partnership with Interim DoD and/or grant consultant
  • Stay abreast of new funding sources and trends to help position LSA ahead of major funding changes and opportunities.
  • In partnership with the Interim DoD, develop/update annual Development Plan and Communications Plan, monitor and report monthly on progress towards fundraising and communications goals.
  • Regularly review and update the Development/Fundraising Policies and Procedures Manual.
  • Coordinate and support all Development Committee activities and staff/coordinate meetings.
  • Attend Managers and Board meetings when required.
  • Write Annual Report.


  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • At least 3 years fundraising experience in a development office within a non-profit organization, including experience with gift processing databases (ideally GiftWorks), Microsoft office, social media, etc. Experience with desktop digital publishing software such as Photoshop or InDesign ideal, but not required.
  • Tangible experience of having been responsible for individual and major donor cultivation and stewardship.
  • Experience with website content management systems and social media management.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral; ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors and other stakeholders and build long-term relationships.
  • Flexible and adaptable style; leader who can positively impact both strategic and tactical fundraising and communications initiatives.
  • Ability to work both independently without close oversight, but also a team player who will productively engage with others at varying levels of seniority within and outside LSA.
  • High energy and passion for LSA’s mission is essential.
  • Ability to construct, articulate and implement annual strategic development and communications plans.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Professional and resourceful style; the ability to work independently and as a team player, to take initiative as well as direction, and to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to analyze budgetary expenditures for compliance with approved budget.
  • Ability to gather and analyze data, compile information, and prepare reports.
  • Ability to make administrative and procedural decisions and judgements.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to travel to meetings outside LSA.
