As it enters an exciting phase of growth, the Full Frame Initiative (FFI) is seeking nominations and applications for the newly-created role of Director of Development (DoD). FFI is a national social change organization that partners with pioneering organizations, systems, and communities across the country to understand the promise of a new approach: shifting attention from short-term fixes that leave new challenges to individuals and communities in their wake, to fostering wellbeing – the needs and experiences necessary for health and hope. FFI seeks to create possibilities for lasting change in people’s lives and spark a broader movement that replaces poverty, violence, trauma and oppression with wellbeing and justice. From catalyzing policy, practice, and culture change to generating field-challenging insights and mobilizing those ready for big change, FFI demonstrates how this shift in focus creates lasting transformation and opens the door for greater equity and success.
FFI is currently partnering with five state agencies in Massachusetts, working on integrating housing and anti-violence services, as well as with the Missouri juvenile justice and child welfare systems, and the St. Louis family courts. With new funding in place and a new national board, FFI is garnering national attention (with recent features in The New York Times here and here) and dramatically accelerating growth across all strategic areas of the organization in preparation for its next stage of development, amplification, and impact.
FFI’s fast growth—doubling in size and budget every two to three years—requires new staff, new partners and new funders. FFI’s revenue comes from a blend of private philanthropy, earned income and government contracts, and the percentage of funding that comes from high net worth individuals is expected to grow significantly in the coming years. Reporting to the CEO, the Director of Development will play a pivotal role in managing the donor relationship process and supporting the CEO in her recruitment and cultivation of new major donors. In 2019, this position will concentrate almost exclusively on supporting the CEO in raising $2 million in growth capital commitments by December 1, 2019, in order to secure an additional $2 million growth challenge. In the first year, the Director of Development will also support the creation and implementation of the annual development plan. In the second year, the Director of Development will act as lead in the execution of the annual development plan. At first, the Director of Development will periodically support the CEO, other staff, and contractors as needed in prospecting for new foundation partners, writing and editing grant applications, and preparing reports. Eventually, this position may take on foundation fundraising responsibilities. This position will be expected to maintain the utmost discretion and confidentiality in all matters.
The successful candidate will be passionate about systemic social change and demonstrate relentless curiosity and strong relational skills. Experience driving major gifts campaigns with vision and efficiency is necessary, as is a proven ability to set up efficient and aligned development information systems and practices. The Director of Development will possess persuasive and accurate writing and editing skills, as well as a strong command of Google Apps with a high aptitude for learning and applying new technologies. They will have the capacity to investigate, analyze, and synthesize large quantities of data, and translate this into user-friendly, concise formats for the benefit of the team. They will also be well-versed in customer relationship management (CRM) or donor relations software and demonstrate a keen ability to cultivate internal and external relationships across a diverse set of stakeholders. They will have familiarity with major foundations operating in the areas of poverty, violence and trauma, particularly in services and policy. The successful candidate will be deeply animated by FFI’s mission and commitment to equity and social justice, and, as a fast-growing organization, be willing to “build the road as we walk it.”

OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES FACING THE NEW DOD
Joining a deeply committed and talented team, the new DoD can expect the following opportunities and challenges:
Drive the expansion of FFI’s donor base, building a solid network of engaged donors committed to FFI’s success. The Director of Development will partner with FFI’s CEO to raise $2 million in growth capital commitments for 2019 as first priority, with additional goals for subsequent years. They will play a key role in developing and implementing FFI’s annual development plans, ensuring alignment with and support of FFI’s overall goals. They will employ a broad spectrum of tools and resources to identify and report on high potential investors, including donors’ biographical and financial capacity and inclination, and any linkages to FFI’s mission or organization. In addition, the Director of Development will cultivate relationships with prospective donors and collaborate with FFI leadership to devise and implement strategies for engagement.
Build standards and oversight to ensure high quality, best practices in resource development and fundraising operations across the organization. The DOD will support the development of systems that ensure quality across the resource development function, including prospect research, cultivation and stewardship, database management, communications and reporting to enhance the capacity of FFI to ensure positive donor experiences. They will create and maintain database systems and tools that allow for precise and efficient donor-related record-keeping.
Effectively leverage communications products and tools to support FFI’s development goals. Working closely with FFI staff, the Director of Development will direct, coordinate and produce content for the Annual Appeal for current and prospective donors. They will collaborate with the CEO and FFI leadership to design effective direct mail and online giving campaigns and play a lead role in planning and executing fundraising events and campaigns. The Director of Development will also work with the CEO to prepare persuasive grant applications and timely, accurate reports, as well as source new prospects and grant opportunities. In addition, together with the Communications team they will consistently ensure that all content is of the highest quality, with compelling written and visual material that convincingly communicates FFI’s potential and impact.
QUALIFICATIONS OF THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE
While no one candidate will possess all the qualifications listed below, the successful candidate will embody many of the following professional and personal abilities, attributes, and experiences:
- Demonstrated passion for and experience working for social justice and systems change to upend inequities.
- Five to seven years of experience in development and prospect research; consideration will be given to candidates with less experience who bring a demonstrated ability to be relentlessly curious and highly relational;
- Demonstrated success supporting major gifts and successful proposals; experience with prospect identification and research required;
- Strong project management and problem-solving experience;
- Demonstrated knowledge of major foundations in the areas of poverty, violence, and trauma (services and policy) preferred, but will consider candidates with strong transferable skills and a lot of initiative;
- Great communication skills—persuasive and accurate writing and editing skills; strong relational skills;
- Knowledge of best practices for development infrastructure, including development information systems, planning, and campaign tracking and management;
- Demonstrated capacity to investigate, analyze, and synthesize large quantities of data into a user-friendly and concise format for the use of the development team;
- Proficiency in Customer Relationship Management (CRM) or donor relations software, experience with Salesforce for Nonprofits preferred;
- Excellence in building internal and external relationships across a diverse set of stakeholders;
- Command of Google Apps in a collaborative environment (G-Suite: Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Hangouts,etc.); Microsoft Office Suite (Word,Excel,PowerPoint); and high aptitude for learning new technologies and technology troubleshooting;
- Experience with processes and tools to manage multiple projects, schedules, and calendars;
- Experience in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
